This question really lacks any helpful detail. I am sure there is a good reason (unless you have a really convincing ABB rep. who sold the company you work for gear you don't need).

We could offer a guess (cheaper and/or better than alternatives available perhaps).

You are using an optical modem probably because you already have a fiber optic network in place and/or you are in an electrically noisy environment.
