Design of Earthing for Power Plant

Hi all,

I'm working on a grounding project for a power plant. I have the details of grounding and why it should be done and all the grounding connections are connected through a grounding grid underground to reduce the resistance value. My doubt is how the design of that grid is will be and what are the important steps I have to note in grounding project......

Back in the late 70s I had a neighbour who's phone kept cutting out, the phone engineer came & after two hours decided that the earth was not good enough, outside the house was an inspection cover where the line came in, he lifted the lid tipped a bucket of water down it checked the phone was working then said,"If it happens again tip another bucket down the hole", Technology at work eh!

You should get one of these and read it before undertaking your first grounding job. Where is the power plant you will be working on?

Earthing is an exercise where money is buried in the ground.

Lots of money.

Start with the soil morphology at the site.

The soil type and the MEASURED soil resistivity will govern the design.

Rock, sand, clay, loam, mud......and all the permutations that these can present will determine the methodology.

The resistivity will determine the dimensional relationship (sizes, spacing, depth,,,) of the buried elements.

If this is your first grounding project then I would urge you to find a senior mentor to guide you.

Reputable grounding product suppliers are also very helpful and will provide peer review services for your design "for free" when you do business with them and also some free design work at the pre-sales stage.

You have to have professional guidance,you need to know what the soil is like,how wet it is,is it likely to become dry if there is a drought? if it is then how deep must you go to be always conductive, This is not a project for the inexperienced,lives may depend on it, Get professional help from a local expert, someone who knows the the ground & who has possibly done the same thing for other plants.

Dear Friend,

I suppose you are asking for design of switchyard in power plant. If it is so, please refer IEEE 80.

It covers everything.

If you don not have an access to IEEE 80, please let me know.

what u call as grounding grid is also known as earth mat and its design depends on so many factors
