Marking a Logo on a Product

12/10/2011 8:37 PM

Hi all

I am making a 304 SS, 5mm plate about 120mm diameter which carries services and wish to permanently mark a logo on it, as cheaply and tastefully as possible. As it is on the ground and will be walked and driven over, a stick-on label won't last long. It is being laser cut, so that is an option but the lettering needs to be cut through and the "O" have joining webs, also it will weaken the plate. The lettering S-CON can be formed with a 2mm cutter so that is a further CNC option. Any other thoughts?

Thanks Tony

Most laser machines can be used to engrave without through cutting.

Electro-chemical marking/etching is another option.

If it is a one-of-a-kind piece, a jewelery engraver or firearms engraver could likely do it, but I have no idea what they might charge.

A CNC milling machine could work also. (I think, but am not sure whether you want the letters to go clear through versus assuming that the process will have that result.) A sign engraving shop might be able to do this, too.

If you are getting the plate laser cut then make sure that your logo is also shown on the drawing that you will give to the laser cutting shop.

That way you can have it all cut and logo-ed at the same time/cost.

If it is 5mm thick then why do you need the lettering cut through and not just engraved at the trophy shop of the local lawn bowls club?

This will be "stuck" on the pavement to mark a services route right?

Thank you all, it is a coupling plate to supply power or gas etc. to what ever is connected to it and the logo identifies us as manufacturer.

Hi

You should be able to have the logo either laser etched or plasma etched depending on the machine your profile cutter uses.

Traditionally such covers and locater caps are cast and last (legibly) for many decades.

Modern casting can be very elegant

If this is a one off then engraving is the best and cheapest way to go, they can copy from a drawing, increase or decrease the size & if you have a small run, say 100 then it is the best way & it's durable.

The easiest option as has been suggested is to see if the laser company can scribe the logo into the surface. If they have this capability they will not need to cut the letters all the way through.

Another option, if this is something that often comes up on your products, is to use electrochemical etching like this. This produces a shallow permanent etched image in the steel surface & is easy to apply. The initial outlay, including stencils of your logo would be around £500 but after that you can re-use the system on any stainless part at minimal cost.

Good answers all. We sent our logo to a company that makes hardened steel stamps that can be used to mark any soft metal permanently. It cost less than $150.00 US and lasts for thousands of markings.
