Cleaning of Stator Winding

12/13/2011 4:58 AM

What is the suitable method/material/chemical for cleaning stator winding of 23MW alternator, driven by Diesel Engine (oily enviroment)?

Is there any IEC standards for it?

Regardless of whether there is or there isn't, there should be appropriate guidance in the User Manual for a piece of equipment this size. What does it say?

1) first you should TURN OFF the generator; 2) Wait until is cooled ; 3) breed deeply and relax... 3.1) dont use acids 4) read the manual ... and dont use fire !

One of the common solvents used by service professionals for cleaning electrical apparatus is isopropyl alcohol (IPA). It cuts grease and grime, doesn't harm or deteriorate insulating materials, evaporates quickly, doesn't leave any residue, and is not toxic to handle. However, since it evaporates fast, you need good ventilation while working. Also, you should try to control humidity, because the evaporating alcohol can cause excess condensation of moisture on the equipment. My company has had excellent results using IPA on a wide range of electrical equipment.

Depending on the stator winding contamination type.

.

When the contamination is dust mixed with oil, you should used a chemical electric cleaner, when contamination is light dust, wipe all accessible surface areas with a clean cloth, the remaining dust accumulation on the inaccessible area to be blown out by low pressure dry air used dry air only (normally we used N2) blowing on the winding used +/- 15 psi, and the remaining dust to be removed by a clean cloth with dampened by fluid cleaner.

SHARP EDGE METAL TOOLS OR OTHER DEVICES WHICH COULD CAUSE CUTS OR ABRASIONS ( Ex. HARD BRUSHES ] HAS NOT PERMITTED TO BE USED,

Careful, when your generator higher than 11 kV, stator winding is provided with the stress grading insulation and its could be damaged when you used a hard devices for cleaning.

Stress grading insulation is used to minimize of electric field at end of core stator
