Capacitor Explotion in UPS

12/13/2011 12:29 PM

dear gurus,

we have 500 KVA 3 phase system UPS for instrument and electrical load. on the output of inverter there are 3 capacitor 181 microfarad 440VAc for power factor correction.

due to explotion on this capacitor create failure on output of UPS,and tripping our plant.it has come to emergency line but litle delay and than UPS back to normal operation

can anybody give suggestion wether we have to replace with new one or remove these capacitor? which one more advantage?

thanks for help

You have already experienced a plant shutdown due to the failure of these capacitors, perhaps you should find out why they failed before you try anything else. Calling the manufacturer would be a good first step, then ask him how he feels about running his equipment without those caps, probably a bad idea.

Guru or not, let's get this straight...

The capacitors used for power factor correction at the output of the inverter stage exploded...and you want to know if they should be replaced. Is that a true statement?

The UPS automatically went into bypass mode and now it is back online. Is that a true statement?

You want to know if you should remove the capacitors which came as an assembly of the UPS. Is that a true statement?

If you analyze the answers to each of these questions, whether yes or no, I think you will have your final answer.

As to the earlier response, you really should try to figure out what actually caused the problem to begin with. Replacing parts would only be part of the solution.

1.the capacitors used for power factor correction at the output of the inverter stage exploded....YES

2.The UPS automatically went into bypass mode and now it is back online...it was hunting switched to bypass then switch back to inverter. change over from inverter mode to bypass and then switch back to inverter then again change over to bypass it's happened frequently (from event record). i was thinking it's due to short circuit on the output side. UPS system maybe working excellent if the disturbance in main supply side, but behave abnormal if the disturbance on the output side.

3.you want to know if you should remove the capacitors which came as an assembly of the UPS.Is that a true statement? YES, because we are under comissioning for 5 plant... 1 plant succesfully start up and tripped due to UPS failure. and another 4 plant which still under comissioning and all UPS in those plant having capacitor exploded also.

and considering that the function of these capacitor is only for power factor correction it's not equal with the cost of plant trip. and UPS also was running capacitor
