Electrical Panel Room Details

12/16/2011 4:50 AM

Hi All,

In Electrical Panel Room how much distance we are maintained for panel to panel and Panel to Wall. How much depth we consider for Cable trench.

We are folowing panel to panel min. 200mm or maximum 700mm, In trenches depth depends on no. of cable trays. But Some times client will ask to me,

For which reference you are consider for considering the depths and distances

Explain me briefly or Inform to me standards are there for clearances.

(ex. IS standards, IEC standards).

  • Can the door open fully?
  • Can someone work there with the door open?
  • Is there sufficient light for the individual to work there safely?
  • Can other equipment go past the panel with it installed?
  • Can someone gain access to the cable trench to pull and install the cables?
  • Is the trench big enough to get the bending radii required on the cables?
  • Etc., etc.

The question is too general .There are several factors to be considered .

After considering all the points of GURU,

Minimum Safety Clearances as per IS / Factory Inspector

Rear Side of Panel - 1000 mm

Front Side of Panel - 1000 - 1500 mm

At least one side of Panel shall be 1000 mm away from wall , if panel is double front.

Other wise, no restriction - only 50 mm will also do.

Top roof of Panel Room - Min. 16' as per Factory Act

Depth of trenches - depend largely upon the maximum cable size

Generally, 1000 mm - 1200 mm would be suffice.

Pl. refer to the Indian Electricity Rules, 1956. One of the rules very clearly mentions the clearances to be maintained between panels & walls and between panels.
