How can we prevent a fault current within a premises be transferred to the low voltage distribution network?

By using appropriate circuit protection devices at the secondary of the local distribution transformer and further downstream of it. British Standard 7671 shows the way.

Additionally, determine the loading current and short circuit current so that the correct protection device is installed. Protection device shall be perfectly rated to the load current and will trip within time limits as per the protection devices ratings. You may also consider installing surge divertors/arrestors at the switch boards. They will also assist in grounding any power surge and short circuit current effects.
