Christchurch NZ Hit Again by Earthquakes

Not the Christmas we would have wished you folks, our thoughts are with you and yours.

Sorry to hear the news. We have several friends in NZ....one lives in Christchurch.

It just seems they can't catch a break. Our thoughts and well wishes are with the NZ people.

As a Christchurch resident, perhaps I can offer some observations here :

The magnitude of the latest shakes was quite large, but the damage that they have caused appears much less compared to that caused by the earlier quakes. I guess that all but a few of the weak buildings etc were cleaned out earlier.

There is a fair bit of fresh liquifaction in some of the eastern suburbs, I understand that this was almost exclusively in areas that were already condemned. Still annoying for anyone still living there but.

There were some fresh rockfalls in the Redcliffs/Sumner areas, but once again mostly alread-condemned properties.

Most services have been restored, most roads are open again, the shopping mall up the road from me was bustling all day yesterday.

Although some are talking about leaving town, my observation would be that most people are just shrugging and carrying on with their lives.
