Software to Save a Jpg Image to an Exact Size in Bytes

12/24/2011 11:57 AM

I have a firmware .bin file for a Nikon Coolpix L120 camera. I have found that the firmware file contains several jpg images for the user interface. My intention was to modify the start screen image by putting trollface on it and then placing the modified jpg file back into the firmware file and flashing this to the camera so that I can have a Nikon Trollpix L120. The problem is that the file must be exactly 14,784 bytes. Does anyone know of software that can compress the file to this exact size? I have tried Irfan View but that is inaccurate by a few bytes. I know how to inject the modified file with a hex editor.

Try GIMP. I don't know for sure, and you will have to calculate the actual aspect ratio you want, but GIMP should be able to resize the *.jpg image to meet your needs.

I have tried inserting modified jpg images into the firmware file. I then put this firmware on the camera and the images do not change, they stay the same as the ones that came with the camera. How is that even possible?

It would appear that the camera internals are not sourcing your firmware file, but rather accessing the images from some internal source. One would need more information on the camera internal software to determine what is going on...

I have found what the problem could be.

Here is the firmware file header

LENGTH=6553600 SG582 VER=v582-76

DVR=1.20 SUM=664635594 NPROG NDATA NLIPI..

There is a 9 digit checksum here. How could I recalculate this type of checksum for the modified file?

Hi, adlike.

I wonder whether the imaging tookit I am testing can help with that or not? It is said that the toolkit is totally manual and can be customized by users according to our own favors. Any ideas?

Best regards,

Arron

Hi arronlee

I think a fine imaging tookit will help a lot.It would be more convenient for a beginner to save jpeg image or process image files.And you can just try the free trial to help you out.
