Best Metal for Plain Bushing

12/27/2011 3:17 PM

Which is the best metal for making plain bushes to be used inside an engine, like for making a bush for cam-shaft, will be subjected to low to high rpm for a 100cc engine and will be getting an oil constantly from within the engine. (I'm opting for Phosphor Bronze)

Believe it or not: Aluminum is now the choice.

Traditional babbitt is designed to withstand approximately 1,800 psi of load. By contrast, Clevite's AL-3 material has been designed to withstand up to 5,000 psi.

This sounds like what is used in rod bearings for ammonia compressors, where most copper alloys are unsuitable. Engines might be a different story.

For the OP, you can check the PV (pressure/velocity) capabilities of various materials by Web search, comparing with the conditions in the compressor, and taking into account any corrosion issues.

Actually it's for small block Chevy cam bearings. May be over kill for a 100cc engine.

As stated somewhere before, bearings need to be able to allow abrasive particles to embed into their surface so as not to scratch the cam bearing surfaces.

Everything's a compromise.

Alright, I give up, I'll finally ask for a clarification.

Is bush short for bushing, a misspelling of brush, a part of a car that resembles a shrub that is made of metal or an unspecified automotive acronym that only an engine specialist would understand? Frankly the only thing I ever heard related to an engine called Bush was a whiskey or a willing young lady. {Sorry no pictures}

Sintered bronze or heavy duty ball/roller bearings is my take, with a personal preference for ball/roller bearings.

I would go with one of the sintered bronze alloys The porosity will help retain lubricant and trap abrasive particles. McMaster Carr has a good selection of these alloys with their properties.

Why don't simply buy it? rarely you don't get in sizes you need and send it to make in some kind of babbit backed by steel.The aluminum type is more common than it seems but no small factories does for a few.-
