The two principal objectives--minimum resistance to suction flow and high pressure output--are hard to combine in a single design.

Main pump's output is used for general applications and booster output for special items only.

Many manufacturer makes single boiler feed pumps which works fine without boosters. If you analyes you will find it is economical to have design of booster before main boiler feed pump then having single Boiler feed pumps. But this adds one more equipment to maintain.

Booster portion of the boiler feed is more senstive as the temperature of water is high and pressure remains low so these pumps are more senstive to cavitation and hence more maintenance oriented.

If u dont use booster pumps then u have to maintain bfp suction pressure so for this purpose a certain level of pressure is maintained in the deaerator outlet pressure equal to the bfp suction pressure in many cases(mostly on design) it is 5 bar (approx.)
