Motorcycle .. Driver Opinion

01/08/2012 12:24 PM

My friend sent me this link

We are of two opinions

One of us thinks these guy's are safe citing experience and skill. Saying there is no real risk to others or themselves. "These guys do this for breakfast" All pro

One of us is a cycling enthusiast who takes great offense at their high risk behavior.

any views?

Can you say incredibly ignorant, irresponsible, stupid and thoughtless?

Who knows how many wrecks they could have caused with their stupidity. And the sad part is they probably wouldn't have been caught or charged with a crime.

Too bad their insurance company didn't see this.

Closed course, fine. Public streets, no way!

Skipping past the laws and focusing on your specific question

Generally the traffic system only works based on predictability and rule following, when four cars hit a four way stop and each does what they are supposed to do, things go smoothly; when one idiot decides to play traffic cop by waving their hands for other cars to go out of order you get chaos that can result in an accident even at almost zero speed.

All Pro only accounts for the rider's behavior, it does not account for the stunning number of shall we say "less than engaged" drivers out there. And as anyone with a motorcycle license has been taught, the key to safety in traffic is always leaving yourself options; behind, beside, etc.

So all you have to do is watch the video and look at the number of places the rider has no viable option - he is absolutely counting on other drivers not doing something odd, like a sudden signalless lane change, a 'dropped the cell phone' swerve and this guy is repeatedly toast. And before I get a lecture on quick reflexes may I point out there is damned little steering with the front off the ground.

So we have defined the risk to self - very high.

Risk to others - ever been involved in holding someone's hand while they die? Not your fault, wasn't your car he hit, his bones are sticking out through his leathers and you can't do anything but hold his hand and await an ambulance that can't get there soon enough?

What if you were the one who thought you cleared the lane before changing? Or just didn't see him swing out from behind someone else? The guilt can leave you with a gun barrel in your mouth.

Not to mention shutting down the freeway for hours so his body parts can be gathered for the parents.

As a motorcycle rider who has been licensed since my teens - so 30 years plus, this behavior is so selfish and so childish I want to put a bullet in him before he can get on the road.

If a rider does this around me they better take the plate off the bike first as I WILL call a cop.

Hows them for views?

And HE is the proper pronoun, this kind of stupid seems to be largely limited to male children. Speaking of which, I trained all three of my sons to ride, so it ain't that I hate bikes or riders.

It's in the genes.

Guys are just plain stupider than girls. Always have been, always will be.

And, young guys are just stupider than old guys.

As an experienced rider who has ridden all over the world, I must admit I have seen more riders like this in America than anywhere else.

I agree with Edignan even if these guys can handle the way they ride they put other people at risk, that is unacceptable. I ride fast but I don't have any desire to do stunts. When I ride fast I do so away from traffic and putting pedestrians at risk so the only risk is what I assume for me.

I don't have a YouTube account, so I could not watch it, but...

Unless this is on a the Nürburgring or a closed track it is wrong to do on public roads.

You wrote, ""These guys do this for breakfast" All pro"

Pro? I doubt that.

You almost never hear about a pro race driver/rider speeding on the street. Real pros save it for the track and real pros intimately understand the risks and do not put the public at risk.

After looking at the vid..........

The hard core bikers of days gone by were/are THE pro's. Still many of them out there, the die hard bikers.

I still have my class "M" but have not had the bike out for.....well too many years to fess up to.

The crotch rocket jockeys............hold on......trying to choose my words wisely...............................fair game.

I have about 42 years of riding under my belt. These guys scare me more then the a$$hole on my rear fender. I can always signal a lane change and let him hash it out with the next vehicle. Riding home from work recently, I met two of these idiots, but very briefly. I was in the middle lane with a car and truck on each side of me. Before I could even register what was going on, one bike passed me on the left and one on the right between the vehicles. Thankfully the trooper chasing them went into the left breakdown lane and not through me. They were going so fast I never even got a look at the plates.

Thanks guys.. save it for the video games was my opinion.. no track in the world would allow anything like this. My friend admitted his opinion was formed under the influence of extreme snowboarding withdrawal.. terrible symptoms..
