Fuse for 2000 Cavilear Cigarett Lighter?

01/06/2012 9:29 AM

I have a 2000 chevy cavilear and I use the cigarett for charging cell phones and useing GPS systems, but the 15 amp fuse only last a short time. Should I try a 20 amp? I just don't want nothing to catch fire.

Thanks for any Help

No. Don't switch to a 20 amp.

How long is the wire between the dock and the phone, GPS, etc.?

Make it as short as possible.

None of the devices you mention is capable of drawing anywhere near 15 AMPS.

There's an intermittent short somewhere in your wiring.

Have you figured out when the fuse blows?

Long cables are certainly a concern, but for such small loads as GPS and i-Stuff, I wouldnt care. If the current is below 15 Amp. you most likely have lose terminals at the fuse holder itself, clean them and retighten/close them, so when you place the fuse, it fits snug.

Lose connections overheat, and can blow fuses that are actually operating within their rating, and are a constant risk of fire.

Regards

Don't believe either of those devices draw more then 15 amps. Unless you are trying to run 1/2 dozen of them at the same time. So i would look for some other cause for the fuse not lasting. Other devices that maybe on the same circuit or wiring shorts. Bad lighter socket. As far as replacing it with a large fuse. Only use the size fuse marked on the fuse panel for the device. The wire is only sized for that amp draw. Increasing it may fry the wire and those with it in the harness.

Just wrap some foil around the blown fuse and insert it back into the fuse block. You will no longer be bothered with nuisance fuse replacement

JUST KIDDING

As the others have stated here, something else is causing the fuse to blow.

Check the simplest thing first - the cord you are using.

Any kinks, twists, nicks, bare spots or other damage? How does the wire look where it transitions into the device end plug or the lighter socket plug?

Check the power wire from the lighter socket back to the fuse block. Any pinch points, nicks, bare spots?

As some point in time was another accessory tied, tapped, or teed into the power wire feeding the lighter socket?

Lastly, is the fuse block in good shape and clean? No corrosion, cracks, breaks, dangling wires, or foreign objects in contact with the block? Is the fuse block securely attached to the vehicle structure so it is not bouncing around, coming into contact with ground?

If none of these suggestions provide a solution, trade your 2000 in for a 2002

Come on! everyone knows you don't wrap foil around the fuse. A .22 short used to work, but with the new blade fuses they don't fit. Ya gotta make a jumper using 2 spade lugs and 10 ga wire.

AHHHHH HAAAAAA!!!!

Your the guy, I once found 3 sticks of 7/8" ACR Copper tubbing in a roof mounted service disconnect. The customer wanted to know why his blower motor burnt up (actually flamed out the inside of the unit) and the fuses did not blow, but it eventually tripped the main.

LOL.....if you increase the fuse, be ready to replace it before the insurance adjuster comes out to find out why your car caught on fire.

Actually as many have mentioned DO NOT UP SIZE THE FUSE the vehicle may catch on fire.

You wouldn't be trying to hide the fact that you have a Chevy Cavalier through spelling obfuscation, would you?

I wouldn't wrap the fuse with foil because aluminum is much too expensive for a Chevy...and it smells bad when burnt.

I couldn't easily find the wiring diagram so that's up to you. Try and find out what else is on that same circuit. Your accessories may simply draw enough current to put it over the top, e.g., your glove box light may be on and/or the dash lights, dome light, etc.

Normally the plug in adapters for accessories have an internal fuse anyway...and at a value lower than the socket itself...so you could reasonably ascertain that your accessories were not the cause after the plug in the circuit...i.e., if your accessory jack had a 10A fuse but your 15A for the plug was blowing...you would know that the accessories were drawing no more than 10A, and therefore not the singular cause to the excessive draw of current.

I would add....make sure the connections you are using are clean. If you also use the plug as a cig lighter it can get pretty nasty with ash residue. Any weak connection in an electrical circuit will heat up and draw larger than normal.

I would look for an empty fuse holder their is normally one you can hook a new wire to and install a new cigarette lighter with another 15amp fuse. You probably need two anyway.

As silly as it may sound look inside the lighter outlet for things that shouldn't be there. My daughter had a coin get in the outlet which of course caused the fuse to blow.

Hello DN could you please tell me when the fuse blows? for example does the fuse blow shortly after you replace it or when you plug a device into the lighter.

I had the same problem only on a GMC van. After days of searching, changing dome light fixtures, moving wires and searching for grounds I found the cig lighter socket shorting to ground inside itself where an insulator between hot to ground appeared to be some type of cardboard and the slightest movement compressed the insulator enough to ground out. A new lighter socket first would have saved me allot of headaches but then again I usually start on the wrong end and change parts on the whole circuit anyway. Take the socket apart and you may find the same insulator that grounds out when you move the male adapter around inside the socket to make contact.
