High Set Instantaneous Overcurrent Relay

01/10/2012 2:42 PM

Hi guys,

Just wanting some understanding; regards to my power systems course that I am undertaking.

We are onto overcurrent protection and reading about transient overreach ? just want to understand the following terms i.e low transient overreach and high transient overreach(percentage transient overreach).

Does this mean with a high set intantaneous relay that if the setting was say 5000A that if a fault occurs downstream(say 5500A) from this zone(another zone on radial feeder) that was over 5000A that the relay will operate for an out of zone fault that it has a high transient overrreach? and if it operates say at close to the zone start of say 5001A then it has a low transient overreach?

regards
