Oil Analysis of Natural Gas Compressor

01/11/2012 7:10 AM

We are running a Compressed Natural Gas ( CNG ) compressor at our gas station in Lahore, Pakistan. The make of our Natural Gas ( CNG) compressor is Kwangshin, Korea.

We are interested in getting the discharged compressor oil tested from our compressor, so we can have idea of the status of internal parts wear as well as oil's characteristics. And thus if some part is being worn-out, and disintegrating into particles, then we would be in position to replace the part before any other major damage is done to the compressor. We assume that in addition to wear tests we may find contamination, cleanliness viscosity at room temperature as well as 100 C, and water content to be of our benefit.

Which standard tests do you recommend us enabling us to have a clear picture of internal parts of our compressor ? And other related information about our equipment.

What does it say in the user manual?

If you have gone to the trouble to find us, find a company that performs these tests and ask them. You'll be paying them. They would have an incentive to help you. We don't.

This isn't rocket science.

As already explained get with a testing lab, they can best guide you. HOWEVER you will need to provide the following (I'm sure I left out a few but this is just for starters);

1- Manufacturers oil specifications

2- Specifications of oil being used

3- Specific machinery specifications including all wear materials composition.

Polaris labs does fantastic work. I have them analyze all my oil samples, and they have always done a fine job.

Thanks for your input

The Noria Corporation publishes instructional materials and at least two free newsletters that deal with industrial machine lubrication, testing procedures, recommended practices and things to avoid. You may find these both useful and interesting.

You have clubbed two different issues together. One is testing for lubrication properties in used oil and other is analysis of wear debris in used oil. Viscosity, moisture content, TAN number etc are lubrication properties which will be helpful in making pridictions for oil replacement.

"so we can have idea of the status of internal parts wear as well as oil's characteristics. And thus if some part is being worn-out, and disintegrating into particles, then we would be in position to replace the part before any other major damage is done to the compressor."

Wear debris analysis can be helpful for your above requirement. Based on the material, size and shape of debris in outlet oil, worn-out part can be predicted much in advance, so it is also called pro-active maintenance. We get it done by "SPM-Predict" for our compressors.

Mr Pritam,

You have correctly pointed out, I am interested in that pro-active maintenace.

Is "SPM-Predict" name of testing lab or is it name of test carried out ? Can you send me more details about this ?

Thanks.

Sorry, it's not SPM-Predict, but "Predict Technologies". You can google it to find its contact. They deply their own personnel to collect used oil samples from machines in a specially made 200 ml plastic cans to prevent ingration of outside particles. In India their test lab is at Hyderabad. Usually they take about a week to give result. If possible, I shall forword a copy of it through private message.
