Do They Have It? If Not, Will Somebody Please Make One

This is a wish list of technologies wanted....I'll kick it off with;

A microwave oven that tells me what the temperature (average temp) of the stuff I'm nukin' is at....

If temperature is an expression of the level of vibration of the molecules, that one is going to be difficult inside a device that vibrates molecules with microwaves. It does sound like a good one for either KrisDelTM or LynDoor Industries though...

OK, make that a mug or regular glass holder instead of a wine glass holder, and make that a plate capable of serving real portions of real food, and not just a ridiculous adminicle for those snob idiots pretending to be eating, and I'll buy it.

The wine glass is at the opposite side where the plate is held creating a center of balance away from the hand...awkward and stressful to the wrist...With the hand under the plate, a loss of control and balance is present...poorly engineered imo...Who feeds people without chairs or tables anyway?

We had one but it died!

You just need a Microwave with a hole in the top then you can buy the sensor that goes through the hole and plugs into the chicken, or whatever it was that was being cooked and measured! Philips is a posibility?

Bon Chance.

My better half has just told me that it never worked, she only had that gizmo because I wanted it and noone ever used it!!

We cannot remember the make, Sorry.

Another memory is that most Philips Microwaves used revolving antennas to stir the microwaves , rather than turning the food. But that could be even easier.

Good luck

Sleepy.

Whirlpool and Kitchenaid (Whirlpool) had them and may still have them in the form of a thermometer probe that plugs into the back wall of the cavity and then is plunged into whatever you are cooking.

Basically, it cooks until done to your tastes.

That's no good, ya gotta' keep washing the probe all the time...Plus I don't like the idea of stickin' something in the food or beverage, it's just awkward and disturbing for some reason...I want it to scan the food and give average temp...I have an infrared gun that gives surface temp, you can take as many readings as you want and then it gives av temp, but the temp would have to be uniform, so hot spots would be a problem...I wonder if it could be done mathematically...

The problem with surface temperature is a microwave does not heat evenly. You really do not know the core temperature and you can't by measuring surface temperature.

That doesn't make a probe immune to the problem of uneven heating, either.

I don't know which manufactures and/or models have the best even heating. I just know my Frigidaire OTR doesn't! I have dishes that have one part of the food actually boiling and others may have residual ice crystals or at room temperature.

Maybe that's why the probe thing never caught on....Maybe a wider spectrum of microwaves, or an induction coil added underneath...I wonder if the induction coil would effect the microwaves?

The problem is not spectrum, but distribution of the radiation pattern. It is really hard to get an even radiation pattern.

Compounding the problem is the rapid heating speed.

I like the idea of this microwave test but I'm disappointed in the execution of this test. Look again at the "bad pattern" results. The overheating occurs directly above the decorative markings of the plate used to hold these crackers. In all of the other tests a different ceramic or plastic plate was used. It has long been known that reflectors can concentrate microwave radiation. A reflector is used in many microwave popcorn bags to promote cooking of just un-popped kernels. I suspect the plates used made a more significant difference in uniform energy deposit than oven design.

Re: Do They Have It? If Not, Will Somebody Please Make One

My microwave oven displays an approximate food/beverage temperature as it heats.

It even stops heating when a desired temperature is reached.

Yes, you can cook on a time/power basis as well. Even do steady temperature cooking with set elapsed time (for baking)

Apparently it has a few IR sensors and a proprietary algorithm to work out the temperature of the item in the oven.

It also has normal convection and radiant heat grilling capabilities (that i don't use)

I remember when i bought it that the controls on most microwave ovens were a bit useless or difficult to decipher.

I went for mine because it was all in English. Some good single button controls eg cup of hot water heated to set temp also reheat food to desired temp button.

My favorite preset icon was the "Heat Up Sake" button. No need to consider volumes or times....very difficult as the party kicks on. A lot of thought put into that feature by some empathetic Japanese folk. That feature sold it.

It's a Toshiba ER-A7

Why on earth don't companies that make crockery (mugs, teapots etc.) put "drainage" notches in the bottom rim so that you don't end up with little pools of water in the upturned bottom at the end of a dishwasher cycle.

I've seen bar mugs that are notched or drilled for precisely that reason. I used to ask my drinking buddies, and later my children, if they could figure out what they were there for.

It wasn't always clear if the glasses were manufactured that way, or some irked dishwasher or bartender decided to whip out his Dremel and take care of the problem...

Call my wife (who could really qualify as a CIA Chef Grad ) and I (I'm no cooking slouch either) old fashion, but we don't cook food in a microwave. YUUUCCKKKKK! We only use it to thaw frozen food or reheat leftovers.

I've rather cook in an old cast iron pan on the stove top (gas only) or use the gas oven!

okay, this is OT.

Well that's what I'm talking about, reheating food and beverages...The only thing I cook are those prepacked frozen vegetables in those steam pouches, they seem to do well, and potatoes some times, so much faster than baking and no difference in taste...Instant oatmeal works well...and some frozen entree's ....

I found this one

Panasonic Prestige NN-SD797S 1.6cuft 1250 Watt Sensor Microwave Oven Stainless

but it doesn't say if it has a real time readout or not...

Pretty tall order, the peak temperature often does not occur until a time after the energy is absorbed. Guess surface infrared detection could work relatively well. The "auto" programs for most ovens detect air temperature and moisture, but there is no feedback other than time to finish.

I'd like to have an advanced warning signal to my better half's explosion before it becomes an inescapable event.

If I could read minds there are many things I would do......and not do. Haven't learned how to yet. You would think after 43 years I would be able to recognize the signs, but they keep on changing

I guess there will always be some problems that science can not solve.

Interesting patterns shown by the cooked food, caused by the stupid idea of rotating the plate. My 20 year old Candy revolves a metal fan in the top of the oven, constantly changing the shape of the cavity and therefore creating an ever-changing heating pattern. Plus awkward shaped items don't bump the door and walls.

Sensing systems don't need to be affected by the microwaves - the ovens control cooking speed by cycling power on and off anyway, so sense while it is off.

Measuring the temperature of air blown through the oven should be a reasonable way to measure an average of the food.

Microwaves do both. They have a rotating deflector for the magnetron beam and a rotating table for the food.

Re: Do They Have It? If Not, Will Somebody Please Make One

True, most have source dispersion but only some have rotating tables. I don't envy the designers having to establish an economical sized cavity that is supposed to set up uniform standing waves with the load possibility of everything from a cup of coffee to a small roast.

My earlier idea of using infrared detection would have to be pretty complex (multiple or moving sources) to account for the time delay of surface temperatures, the uneven generator patterns and varying load sizes. It is not impossible, but with the prevailing low prices of most ovens, I'm not sure many would pay a large premium unless the displayed temperature results were more effective than the intuitive experience (guessing time & power) many gain who use microwave ovens every day.
