States Electric Company Mystery

01/18/2012 10:37 AM

Greetings All,

I thought some would find this discovery interesting.

In the process of upgrading the electrical system in a very old tunnel on a local collage campus, I came across this panel which was to be demo'd:

In my eyes this thing is a piece of art and in very fine condition.

This panel was installed in a very heavy steel tub with no markings on it. I think the tub was added at a later date as there is still evidence of knob and tube wiring in areas of the tunnel and I assume that this panel was originally installed exposed.

The larger circular objects adjacent to each fuse are on/off switches.

The darker metal and porcelain fuses which I assume are original have a head stamp on the metal band that reads "Chicago Fuse MFG. Co." A Google search shows that Chicago Fuse Mfg. Co. was founded in 1889.

The glass fuses are head stamped "Electro Fuse". This fuse has what appears to be a paper insert with printing on it. I can make out "UND. Lab Inc Insp." I think these are newer. Google search revealed nothing on "Electro Fuse".

This is a close up of the tags on the lower right (sorry for the blur):

The top tag reads:

States Electric Company

Manufacturing And

Designing Engineers

Chicago

The bottom tag is an IBEW emblem with the number 17465

The emblem is similar to the one below except it reads "International" rather that "National" and does not bear a date:

The tunnel I worked in was constructed in the 1898 - 1900 period based on my research in the college "Plant and Facility Construction" archives. Unfortunately, the archive did not contain any info about this panel.

I have Goggled "States Electric Company Manufacturing and Design Engineers Chicago" and several variations there-of but cannot find any info about this company or panel.

I sent an inquiry to my local IBEW regarding the tag with number and am awaiting a response but in the mean time, anybody have info on this panel or company?

When/if I here back from my local I will post here.

Will you be able to save it?

It's a beaut! I'd hang it on my wall right over my old Edison upright phonograph.

I was thinking the same.

On a second thought, Hell, it's nice enough to hang over my fireplace but the wifey would self destruct if I did

That stuff is amazing. It would be mounted on my wall without any hesitation.

(But I was divorced for unreasonable behaviour).

Is there an equivalent of the Science Museum (Kensington, SW London, England) nearby? It might form an interesting exhibit there, with or without tranferring ownership, perhaps?

Yes there is.

As a mater of fact about five years ago we replaced a 1910 switchgear at the same collage.

The design was almost identical except much larger.

The thing was 24 feet long and 8 feet high and 4 feet deep.

We donated it and the museum took an 8 foot section of it. Don't know if it was ever put on public display though.

Have not decided what to do with this yet.

Definitely similar and in a close time frame.

Just wish I could dig up info on the States Electric Company.

This is an interesting read, and I think explains this company somewhat...

Great find and very interesting read.

On another note, I enjoy reading about the "Edison" plants. I have had the good fortune to work in two of them in my area and still do from time to time. One (Fisk - Unit 19) built in 1902 and the other (Crawford - Units 6 & 7) built in 1924, both coal fired.

Both of these are massively sized plants having been added to over the years.

My scope of work is investigative for bids for upgrade work and exploratory for work in progress so I am afforded time to wander and explore.

Still a lot of areas with very old equipment that is no longer used. In fact at both of these stations I have found areas (control rooms, break rooms, offices, test labs) that were abandoned at some point and in many cases had the entrance walled over (but you can almost always find a secondary maintenance entrance).

Some of these areas look as if one day the last person to leave simply turned out the lights, closed the door, and no one ever returned.

It was explained to me that it was less expensive to simply abandon these areas rather than demo them.

Whew, I went way OT on this but thanks again for the find.

Like I said, when I hear from my local IBEW on the pictures and tag info I sent I will post it here.

I still come across houses with the old marble boards in them. The old timers talk about having to drill through them by hand and the ease with which they could be shattered (usually on the final hole that is required to be drilled.)

Marble, yes.

I did forget to mention how heavy this thing is.

My guesstimate - 60 - 65 lbs.
