Another Space Heater Question

01/18/2012 2:18 PM

My metalworking area of my shop is only 80 sf. I have an 11" lathe and a 6 x 24 mill in there plus all my precision measuring tools. I keep an electric heater running, set to low just to take the chill out of the air. The temp can get down in the 30's overnight. I don't want everything getting rusty. If I use an incandescant bulb instead of a space heater, would that be more economical? The space heater is set at 1200 watts and runs intermittantly while a light bulb would be burning continuously. What size light bulb would work?

Infrared lamp. Heating the items in the room before the air. Which would place the tools temperature above dew point so no condensation if that's the problem.

How about a 120 volt, 150W heat lamp?

We use these in the barns during the winter to give the critters a warm place to go.

80 SF, I imagine you could get by with one, maybe two.

There are a few things to consider first, ceiling height and insulation value of walls and ceiling/roof.

Just a thought.

EDIT - Yea, what ozzb said

Instead of just heating, why not dehumidify instead?

I would consider anything that was the most cost effective short of a bonfire.

Most cost effective for a 'tool room' full of expensive stuff is reverse cycle AC.
