European Change To Unleaded Petrol.

01/19/2012 10:35 AM

EU rules mean that from the beginning of 2012, standard unleaded petrol will contain 10% Biofuel instead of the previous 5%. Most modern cars will not be affected but older cars, direct injection & carburetter engines might have to switch to the more expensive premium unleaded. Here is a link to a PDF file which is a combination of an Auto Express article & a list of car compatibility from the Petrol-heads web site.

The Navy tends to be conservative when allowing us to access sites that have previously been reported to be associated with unsavory practices...i.e., games, hacking, porn, etc.

Think of it as SOPA for the Department of Defense...we've been living with it for about 10 years now and it really doesn't hurt us.

We have been using E10 in Germany for at least most of 2011, if not earlier.

There is a list of cars that do not handle it well, even some relatively modern cars do not handle it. But the great majority handle it with no effect other than a slightly increased fuel consumption, which offsets any price savings here anyway.....

If you have an older car, that already has a catalytic converter, it will probably run exactly as before.....

I do not know of any harm done to any motor......I also have not seen a list of any of the symptoms of when it does not work.

I have filled most recent models of Audis, Mercedes, BMWs, VWs, Skodas, Alfas and Opels and not noticed any problems.....all built in the last 6 years or so....

It is a relatively small number of cars in Germany actually affected....

The symptoms I have seen reported are rough running & premature engine wear. The E10 fuel is more corrosive than E5 & can damage seal that were not specifically designed to run with it. As you say, most modern cars will be OK but there are a lot of older cars still in use.

The seals on some older cars may be affected, but if that is not a problem, then older cars usually run fine......
