Er, to prevent the circuit protection devices upstream of them operating, perhaps?

To avoid hunting of generator AVR

To avoid failure of Surge Suppressor in the Rotating Rectifier

To avoid failure of generator winding insulation

During starting of gen set usually it is in no load, if the capacitors are connected stator MMF aid the rotor MMF are additive which leads to increase in voltage, now when the gen set is loaded Voltage drops drastically. In this condition AVR cant compensate the voltage drop with in the safe time limit.

Capacitors should be kept in OFF condition because it acts as a load for Diesel gensets.Thats why DG sets are rated in KVA.While coming to Power plant alternators capacitors are switched ON to maintain P.F.
