Which Type of Mass Flow Meter Should I Buy?

01/27/2012 12:30 AM

I am in need of measuring mass flow rate of my application with following details:

Pressure range: 6 bar to 25 bar (Pressure varies in cycle during operation)

Temperature range: 10 degree C to 40 degree C

Pipe size range: 1/4", 3/8"

Can you suggest me type of mass flow meter which is suitable for this type of application. The meter should have capability of digital indication and data acquisition with PC. Can you tell me which company provides good accuracy and good precision?

Paresh,

The material that you are measuring will determine the type of flowmeter that is best for your application. Is it a liquid or gas and is it corrosive or abrasive. What accuracy will you require? The accuracy will affect the flowmeter cost by orders of magnitude for a small change. If you can live with +/- 1%, don't pay for +/- 0.1%. Also decide whether you are interested in accuracy or repeatability. Accuracy is a property of the meter from the factory. Repeatability is from on site calibration at a particular flow rate.

What is the fluid in the flowmeter?

I am going to use helium gas from 8 bar to 22 bar pressure in pipe size either with 1/4" or 3/8" with flow temperature range from 10 degree C to 40 degree C. Typical mass flow range expected to measure is 0.5 gm/sec to 2 gm/sec.

Paresh,

Wonderfully benign material!

This is the darling of flow metering. There is nothing you couldn't use.

What accuracy or repeatability do you require? You could go from a very cheap differential pressure type to a very expensive positive displacement type, with many possibilities in between.

I would tend towards one of the coriolis effect meters that are available from many manufacturers.

Thanks, I am also thinking about the same. Thank for clearing my doubts. Can you tell me how much it costs?

I am unsure on cost, but for that small could be between US$3000 and $10000.

You asked for a specific recommendation.

Siemens FC Mass 2100, specifically designed for metering low mass flow rates.
7.2Kg/ hour is well within its limits.
It's available world-wide.

This is the sensor that is plumbed into the pipe, it requires a separate converter/transmitter for the data signal outputs

A spec sheet available here:
