Calculation of Slope Tank Which Angle is Variable

02/01/2012 3:46 AM

Good day to all,

We have a problem regarding level tx computation. we have had hard time to get the right level measurement of a tank due to one point of the tank is changing from time to time upon loading of the tank. Previously, to determine the level of the tank it uses a load cell, due to deterioration of the load cell, we change it to a DP Level Transmitter. The medium of the tank is composed of LC02. Hope that you can help us to get the right level measurement for Tx span. Thank you very much.

Best regards,

Could you make some sort of drawing illustrating the process and problem?

Sorry my friend, we have some technical problem with the scanner/printer. it is a horizontal tank and one end is fixed (actually fixed on a pivot) and the other end is sliding upon loading of the media or the process, we want to know how we can calculate the span of the Level transmitter installed because the angle of the tank is variable, therefore the volume of the tank is variable also depends on the angle of the tank. Thank you

Well, the angle of the tank has to enter into the calculation somewhere, then. What sort of transducer is provided to give the angle and into what is it conencted?

Well you could position a transmitter at either end and add them together and divide by 2...

Why not simply replace the weigh-cell?

PWSlack has the right idea: go back to a weight-based measurement strategy. Trying to correct for span on a tilting tank for DP measurement is not only more complex than something like this really should be, but also prone to measurement errors: the DP transmitter itself will suffer a calibration error if tilted (if it's mounted on the tank), and its suppression will change if it is stationary and connected to to tank with flexible impulse lines. At the very least you would need an accurate tilt-sensor in addition to the DP transmitter, plus a computer algorithm to combine the two measurements into a calculated tank volume. Even then, what you'll get is a calculation for volume, not mass like the load cell gave you.

If the load cell is giving you problems, perhaps it was poorly matched for the task. Talk to a scale specialist to find a more appropriate load cell for the application.

Another option is to suspend the tank with a hydraulic cylinder instead of a load cell, then use a pressure transmitter to sense the cylinder's fluid pressure and interpret it as weight (essentially a hydraulic load cell).

Why can't you use ultrasonic type level tx or any other level tx using Doppler shift or time of flight as their operating principle

The original poster can, of course, though these instruments would not appear to be able to give a volume or a weight measurement in a tank the angle of which varies.

I believe its better to go back to load cells.

Or if the sliding of the Tank is not a requirement then get it fixed and use a dP transmitter as a normal tank.
