SEC 8 DIV 1 and @

02/01/2012 10:07 AM

Hello all, If this question is redundant on my part, I'm not sure that I sent the first question right so I thought I would try again and re-worded,(since I can't remember how I asked).

Can a 5800 psi vessel be built under Sec 8 Div1 at the expense of size and weight? e.g. thicker walls, heads, nozzels and flanges.

What is in the vessel, how much of it and at what temperature?

The vessel is a sand seperator and will have a mixture of sand, oil, water and gas. Current spec say5800 MAWP @100 Deg F.Shell is 20" OD with Hemispherical heads.

Thanks

TR,

A vessel can be built to the conditions you describe under the rules of the ASME Boiler & Pressure Vessel Code, Section VIII. The special rules for high pressure vessels (>3000 psig) will apply.

I do not understand what you mean by: "at the expense of size and weight"....

Your vessel wall thickness for this diameter and extreme pressure will be approximately 4 inches.

"Expense of Size and weight" meaning will Sec 8 Div 1 allow a vessel to be built with bigger and thicker components or will the pressure dictate what division must be used such as div.2 or 3.
