It's Nearly Friday, So What's Del Making Now?

02/02/2012 9:28 AM

It's thin cane strips from an old roller blind, and there's a flower pot and some bricks.
But wha?

Maybe the latest cat creation is being glued and is under the central pot, and the willow and brick on top is to add some very delicate pressure...

So it's Not a Foil Hat Former!

02/04/2012 9:05 AM

Yes folks it's a lampshade.
You can't seem to buy sensibly priced BIG modernist lampshades round where I live, so in true catly fashion I dun make one innit?
It's also doesn't cut down the light much like some of 'em do.
Great for entertaining visiting particle physicists too.

Did you lash the joints, or just glue 'em? (I take it they're not mortise & tenon ).

A little spot of superglue holds 'em, but even without glue it hold pretty rigid.
The cane is soaked in hot water (in the shower, and then left in a bit of old plastic tube full of hot water) before I start to weave it in and out. Once dry it's quite rigid.
As there are 17 canes in each direction that's a lot of joints to glue.

I expect new cane would be more piable, the old blind had been in a South facing window and I expect the UV had made it pretty brittle.
It's easy to cut out and broken bits and weave in new pieces softened in boiling water and then glue the join once dry.

Yeah, it's in a biggish room with another light, for which I have also made a shade. There's a CFL in that one which I've just had to replace whilst the incandescent keeps on going.
Those longlife bulbs make me incandescent when they fail early.
