GlobalSpec Toolbar No Longer Working

02/02/2012 5:04 PM

My system just updated me to Firefox 9.0.1, and the GlobalSpec tool bar no longer works. I don't see anywhere on GlobalSpec where an updated version is mentioned. Any suggestions for getting it back?

Hi CW,

My FF updated today also. I re-started my CPU and everything works including the tool bar.

Have you done a re-start?

Just a thought.

Reboot didn't work. Trying to re-install the latest from Global Spec tells me it is incompatible with Firefox 9.0.1 (I lost a couple of other Add-ons as well- the only other one that was semi-critical was the multirow tool bar, which I was able to upgrade). Guess it's time to look at another browser- Firefox's update schedule has been making me nervous for a while- looks like they finally broke it.

Download this. Even if it's just for CR4 or as a backup. It's very small and it works.

Yup. Javascript enabled. When I try to load the Toolbar from the GlobalSpec site, it tells me that the Toolbar is incompatible with Firefox 9. The only reason I haven't switched to Chromium is because of the Toolbar. Now that Firefox has broken that, I guess I have no reason to stick with Firefox...

FF is now version 10... and I'm posting with it. I checked Safari. Mac OS X 10.7.2 on an Intel Mini.

I'm using

Old P4, 1.5GHz desktop PC
Ubuntu 10.04, Kernel 2.6.32-38, Gnome 2.30.2
Firefox 9.0.1 (just updated)

The CR4 "reply" toolbar items are still working for me. I haven't tried the Engineering toolbar from GobalSpec yet.

mjb1962853 (I wish you would shorten your handle! It's harder to type than my password!)

I have a similar set up, but with a Pentium Dual Core T4200 at 2 GHz (I let the wife use the older equipment), currently using the -36 Kernel. All of the CR-4 features (2reply" toolbar, etc.) are still working (note that the emoticons work!)

The problem is the Engineering Toolbar- when you try reloading it in Firefox 9.0.1, you get an "incompatibility" error. I use the tool box quite a bit, especially for searching for manufacturers and technical specs on equipment...

The Engineering Tool Bar is not available for Chromium, my second choice for a browser- the Engineering Tool Bar was the primary reason for not switching originally. Now, I don't have an excuse...

Ah, well, the functionality I used to enjoy is available on the GlobalSpec web site, and, with Chromium, just a quick click away. Chromium seems to be a bit lighter (i.e., less bloat and faster) than the newer Firefox. Guess that is why a lot of people seem to be switching (if one can believe the numbers coming out of the marketing survey types).

Just use mjb .

About 2 years ago, I briefly used the Chrome browser on my brother's (Windows) laptop. I liked the format and performance for everything "except" the CR4 site. Missing tool bars and rendering oddities for CR4 content were my only negative complaints at that time. I'm now using only Linux and Firefox and have not (yet) had any significant reason to check out Chromium. Best wishes on your search for an alternate browser.

I stick with the native [linux] chromium too

my 10.10 systems creep ever closer to their sell by date [expiration of support]

the desktop environment question looms larger...

Garthh-

I, too, am worried about the desktop environment issue. First of all, I do not need or do I desire a "unified experience over multiple devices". Both Gnome 3 and Unity make me nervous- what are they going to break? So far, i haven't had to deal with it, because my preferred distro (CAELinus) is still, in it's latest version, built on Ubuntu 10.04- they are discussing moving up to 11.04 or 12.04 in their next release. Fortunately, both Open Suse and Fedora are now offering "spins" or whatever they call them, targeted more to the engineering/scientific community, so there are alternatives out there.

I suspect, were I to built my own system from scratch, I would favor Xfrce. I wonder if Xubuntu will be offered as an alternative for future Ubuntu releases?

Re: GlobalSpec Toolbar No Longer Working

Xubuntu is a downstream fork of ubun, so some of the ubun weirdness is bound to bleed through, I don't understand it all, but things that gnome does seem to be basic to most every distro

both suse & fedora seem to need quite a bit of user care & feeding, but at least are downstream of RedHat which runs on a 7 year cycle, suse has changed corporate overlords recently, which could affect the future there...

on the browser front

I don't notice when chrome updates [seamless], the only problem I can remember over the past couple of years, is having to clear the cache so flash would work again

firefox seems to need a restart often & who can tell what will be broken afterwards

Opera continues to be a viable option, though it's not supported here [no editorbar]

Chromium is working fine, and, being less bloated than Firefox, seems to run faster. We'll see how long that lasts...

Thanks, Andy, I just got that one 'suggested' to me by my system and was somewhat concerned. I like Fox, but the constant updates are a pain. It's almost every few months. I have IE, but only use it in extremis. Will possibly download some of the other browsers others have mentioned.

If all goes pear-shaped, I'm assuming I can uninstall foxy 10 and re-install previous version ? Forget all that I just checked and I have Fox 10 ! D'oh !! All is working normal (if that helps anybody). Windows XP home. I can check it on some other systems if people want. Hadn't even noticed the update.

The excessively frequent updating (without permission) of Firefox makes me extremely nervous. That's one of the reasons I abandoned Windows- their "Update Tuesdays" would, more often than not, break some application I depend on. If it works, why fix it?

Of course, I have gotten in the habit with Ubuntu of accepting their "recommended" updates without question- no problems until this incident, no brken applications for years. Guess I need to be a bit more cautious and pay more attention to what they are recommending.

On my windows laptop, Firefox asks me if I want to update. Maybe you have a setting wrong in FF?

Like this one? (That is my setup by the way and it asks politely!!!

Some of the other settings shown may also be of interest to you too.....

The update came from Ubuntu, not Firefox. I normally do not update working applications unless there is a compelling need- i.e., a new feature I cannot live without (something that very rarely occurs). The update occurred because I did not review what Ubuntu wanted to upgrade- just checked "install all". Never encountered this sort of situation before with Linux, where the upgrade broke a feature I like. I need to pay closer attention in the future...

I use FF10 at home & IE8 at work, both are OK with CR4. Small aside, I keep a copy of 'Portable Chrome' on a memory stick. If I ever have trouble with the other browsers, this will run from the memory stick without installing.
