Real Time Clock

02/03/2012 1:53 AM

Can you give me the advantages and disadvantages of RTC and sensors? I am doing a project on a solar tracking system by using RTC. Is there any disadvantages on RTC? Is it necessary to use for tracking the sun? Can I use LDR sensors?

Advantages, you can do without fiddly sensors.
Disadvanteages, if it loses power or clock you're stuffed.

"Stuffed"! That's what I like about this place, all the technical talk!

If you are tracking the sun wouldn't it be more advantageous to use a solar clock and slave the movement of the tracking device to that? That is essentially what any RTC would do per application...using the correct clock and timing is key.

I think you already know the answer to this...

It seems unnecessarily complex to build a sensor laden system like this. If you know array orientation, location, elevation, all easily obtainable, you can program a timed sun track for 100 years, with pinpoint accuracy, in a small relatively small database, that points the tracker. If you happened to have internet connectivity, a daily time check might be worth doing, but I don't think it is essential. Sun tracking mechanisms are typically not very robust, like the hardware itself. So why add sensors?

You're re-inventing the wheel using logs and rocks.

Why not use readily available tracking software that you can get for free and install on you laptop like this.
