Website with CMS - Wordpress, Joomla etc.

02/04/2012 12:20 AM

Hi all

I'm about to make a new website for a product and have been learning about Joomla here: Joomla Videos (excellent videos). I chose Joomla because I wanted a Website not a blog. This new system where a database controls the content and charges are done on site, instead of on your computer and uploaded, does mean that site owners can write their own newsletters and change their own content with comparative ease.

But even with the excellent videos above, it is not intuitive and for someone who makes a new website every 2 years or so, the learning curve is huge.

What is your experience.

This looks fairly straight forward to me from the video I watched...I do not work in web development but I have designed a few web pages...but written from code.....This looks like templates which should be even easier...what exactly are you having a problem with or are you more interested in a recommendation on Joomla?

My girlfriend who is a web developer says she used to use Joomla but has switched to Drupal which I am now learning for a joint project she and I are working on. There are lots of good videos for that too. This set from Node One is great.

Can't give you any comparative myself but their apparently are tons of feature modules for Drupal. Looks pretty good.

With regard to the learning curve I don't know of any way around that!

Make no commitments before you check out:

http://web2py.com/

It is an award winning Python-based full web framework.

Built in data base and webserver, but if you like, either or both can be changed to the database and webserver of your choice.

Remote administration, Role-based authentication, etc....

And it's free. There are some proven "appliances" that may be close enough to what you need to make customization less than a few days project.

I should have added the "appliances" link for prebuilt websites:

I see I wrote this 11 years ago, wow!

I have written a few websites since then. Now the system of choice is WordPress, simply because there are so many Videos, Editors, Plugins, Applications, Hosting and Themes available at no cost or little cost.
