350 Lb Cannon Ball

02/03/2012 1:34 PM

On Groundhog Day 2012 I heard a report that the NYC Bomb Squad was dispatched to Governors Island as a 350 lb cannon ball was discovered during construction.

I lived there for a couple of years so I took an interest in the story.

My question is what is a 350 lb cannon ball? I thought cannon of that era (Civil War) were measured by the weight of the cannon ball fired. 6lb, 32lb etc. They had several monster guns at the entrance to the golf course just off the ferry, but they were no way 350 lb shells.

Any ideas?

Thanks

Yeah it's a 15"er, they were around that area...They actually made some 20" monsters that shot a 1000lb ball...

" ...at that time a gun bigger than anything the world had ever seen. The first 15-inch gun, "The Lincoln Gun",

made under Rodman's personal supervision at the Fort Pitt Foundry, was sent to Fortress Monroe, Va., where it was tested in March 1861 and became a model for the many Rodman guns which followed. The new gun proved a great success, although its huge size and weight, 49,000 pounds for the barrel alone, made it practical only for fixed positions in forts or permanent batteries.Specifications were impressive. The 15-inch Rodman gun was 15 feet, 10 inches long, with a bore length of 13 feet, 9 inches, or 11 times caliber, a good deal shorter than the general rule. Most black-powder artillery, other than howitzers and mortars, had a bore length of fifteen to twenty times caliber. With an odd bottle-shaped appearance, and the absence of reinforcing rings, something new to artillery, the gun had a maximum outside diameter of four feet. Two types of ammunition were provided--a 450-pound solid shot, and a 330-pound explosive shell carrying a 17-pound bursting charge."

Assuming these cannonballs were cast iron, with the density @ 7.15 g/cc, I'm only getting 13.7" for the diameter. I'm thinking they were made of cast iron, so why the discrepancy?

How many guns/ammunition do you think are actually the 'named caliber'?

But balls were also made of any junk handy, so density due to porosity and inclusions may vary quite a bit.

But for what it's worth Solid Works says a 15" ball @ 7.15 g/cc = 456.47 lbs - which seems to equate well with a "450 pounder" in post #1

As you say 350 lbs equates to 13.78" = 350 mm bore - maybe it's French?

(or that cheap Russian ammo)

Points well taken; and last comment: or if I were French (which I am most definitely NOT - mix of Irish, Scottish, Swedish & Portugese).

No I was just messing with you - energy god spoiled my fun though . I figured that it was a "Bomb Squad" issue was evidential enough to indicate a charge was possibly occupying a (central) volume.

Remember- the 350 lb shell carried a 17 lb explosive charge (which obviously was less dense than the cast iron).

Well the 350lb ball had a hollow space with an explosive charge, that seems to be the type mentioned by the OP's article, the 450lb ball was solid but probably not of very pure material...

How stupid of me to not think of that. No demolition person would rely on just the weight of the projectile to cause enough damage. What a concept!

And that, my friends, is why there are no 800 pound gorillas roaming around today.

OK, look, it's Friday and I'm tired.

Great reply and GA, though those with heavy balls are known to do great things.
