Corrosion Allowance for Stainless Steel

02/08/2012 1:00 AM

Dear All,

Is corrosion allowance needed for stainless steel pipe which is installed near sea shore?

Regards,

Suman Padakandla.

Not if your using the right stuff....

" Type 316 (2-3% Mo) stainless steel has been shown to provide the necessary corrosion resistance for most applications, at a cost competitive with other piping materials. Where additional corrosion protection might be needed, as in shoreline installations, the duplex SS (3.0-3.5% Mo) can be used to achieve the required hygiene, cost and service life."

With the availability and suitability of plastic pipe systems these days, it really is a mystery why metals retain such favour.

Pehaps you might want to look at operating conditions before making a blanket statement in favor of plastic. Things like high temperature or high pressure just might preclude PVC.

Not all SS is created equal.

What is the application? Handrails?

Expected service life? 1 week or one decade?

Are you on a rig, shore based..?

What are you using now?

What is your objective and motivation (What and why)?

Paint the full picture. Trust me, you can't give too much information.

Ask the customer what they require (compliance to a standard may be a requirement) and design accordingly.

This is generic advice. I can't proffer a standard for you to reference.

For the ultimate in corrosion resistance in a seaside application. Use Hastelloy tubing.

It will survive a tsunami!
