Sir, I would be glad to assist in specifying and sourcing pump for your application. Please provide the following:

1) What is the material and ID of the well casing? Is the well open to the producing aquifer, perforated, screened?

2) What is the static fluid level? Other head losses anticipated due to piping, elevation, pressure requirements?

3) What is the expected yield of the well? (How much drawdown at a given pump rate)

4) What is the expected demand rate per day?

5) Is there a power source available? Electric (Phase, voltage)? Engine? Etc?

6) What is the intended use of the produced water?

The following data is from a private well around my neighborhood. It´ll give a general idea of what you need for your particular well:

Pump type: Submersible; 3" discharge; 90-100 gpm at 30 m deep, motor 7.5 HP 3500 rpm, 230VAC/3Ph/60Hz. Total installed cost about USD 4800.

I have used the Grundfos SP range submersibles in the past. I was pumping brackish water from about 50m below the surface for cooling of a chiller heat exchanger.

Without knowing the details I cannot specify what pump you need but you can check out www.grundfos.com . I think that website you can even type in your repuirements and it will select a pump for you. They will also supply you with all the pump characteristics and graphs.

Try what we Indians do for the most cost effective way of doing it, physical size permitting of course.

With regularly depleting ground water levels what we do is have a floating platform on which to mount the regular pump. Use a very long & good quality electrical wire. Your suction head never exceeds about 1.5 meters. Just ensure that the delivery head requirements are met by the pump.

No permanent fixtures required. Easily services by simply pulling up the entire platform.

Pump sizing depemds upon 3 factors: Required volumetric flow rate, required static head (height to be raised, in your case 30 meters), and frictional resistance (pipes and fittings) in meters of water. Add the frictional resistance to your static head; that will give you the required pressure of the pump. Now check the pump curve for a pump that meets the required flow rate and pressure head, and yes, if you have these data, you can go to http://www.grundfos.com to have your pump selected automatically. Use the webcaps feature.

Yes but you also need to check the NPSH. Your pump needs to be able to "suck" the water into the inlet or else you will get cavitation. I say "suck" because it is the easiest way to refer to it but in actual fact no pump can suck water in. (Only the atmoshpere pushing it into the eye).

In your case if you are going to use a submersable then this wont be a factor but bear it in mind if you are using a shore based pump and your suction lift is quite high.

The type will depend on the quantity and application.

I will list a few options.

1 Turbine - Efficient suitable for larger quantities because big prime mover is situated at the surface. Drive shaft in pipe is required.

2 Screw type pump - screw in rubber stator. Very much the same as 1. warning . this is a positive replacement pump.

3 Submersible - Closed coupled turbine and motor down in the bore well. Very convenient - should be about the first choice.

4 Jet pump - not so efficient. 2 pipes down the hole. additional friction as water is pumped down and must be conveyed up again.

5 Air lift pump.

6 Reciprocating pump

7 wind mill - low cost water supply - Can be used with reciprocating and screw type pump. not suitable for urban use.
