White Bearing Rust Inhibitor

02/19/2012 10:42 PM

Does anyone know of a rust inhibitor for white metal bearings for a HV Electric motor that will be in long term storage (About 12 months) and does not need to be removed before it returns to service. It must be compatible with the motor's lubrication system which is a common tank? I want to be able to place it into service without dismantling the bearing housing for clean up etc.

If you can't seal it, have a small wattage electric heater inside it to keep out condensation. Check with motor manufacturer for recommended wattage, usually 50 or 100 watts is adequate.

Using a space heater to keep out condensation shall be the most easy and economical option. Usually HV motors do come with space heater

Apply adequate same lubrication Oil and pack such that it is totally protected from dust and humidity. You may not required to dismental but it is always preferred to dismentle ,clean and lubricate before operating

What about placing it in a tank or container with dry nitrogen. Keep a couple of bottles chained to the outside and regulate to about 2 -3psi?

Coat it with a layer of grease . This is an excellent preservative.

Yes,this is also an excellent alternative. But this needs removal of entire grease before operation as during storage dust particles might have sticked to the grease

The grease will also clag up the oil galleries.

These are pressure fed bearings. Right?

Pressurize the bearings with the specified lubricant.

Chock the shafts so the lube oil isn't pressed out from between the bearings and their corresponding shaft journals.

Lock off the armature so it can't rotate.

Disassociate the lube lines and plug off the union mates on the machine.

Lift the motor and wrap it with plastic. Big, durable bags are ideal. Other wise cling wrap it. Throw a few bags of fresh desiccant in with the motor. Store it in a crate, somewhere dry.

Rust is less of a risk than scouring of the bearing surfaces if rotated or mechanically shocked without pressurised lube film suspension.

Usually such motors do come with a "key-way" in the shaft. This may also be used to restrict the motor shaft from rotating, thereby considerably removing any possibilities of mechanical damage. We can certainly assume the motor shall be stored in place that is not prone to vibrations
