CT Outside GIS Enclosure

02/19/2012 10:00 PM

Why for the CT outside the GIS enclosure, the enclosure itself must be provided with an insulationg joint, and enclosure currents shunted around the CT. I had read this in Electrical power substation book but its not mention the reason. Anybody have an idea?

Thanks

Does the conductor whose current the CT measures pass through the enclosure?

There are single conductor inside the enclosure.

The CT was install outside the enclosure and if you can see there are plastic insulator on the left side of the enclosure.

Most Electrical Power Engineers do, but many "handbook engineers" don't Here's a hint-- Is it your goal to measure the current only in the current carrying conductor or the vector sum of the current in both the current carrying conductor and the enclosure?

I need to measure the current only in the current carrying conductor.

The GIS enclosure forms a closed loop around the CT core like one turn of wire. Without insulation this loop would short circuit the CT and cause malfunction. However, to ensure the continuity of GIS enclosure, shunt bars are connecting the enclosure parts outside of CT core.

If you need further explanation, I can send you picture.
