The part is somehow held or clamped in place, along Datum A, while being inspected.

Datum A is likely a major feature that relates to a number of other critical features.

For example the feature "Datum A" might be clamped to a surface plate while the part is being inspected.

Thank you very much for your constant help. I am learning German now because German is more accurate to express a technical definition than English.

I'm not so sure.

In a drawing, Datum (from Latin, usually translated as given or gift) is nearly always a point, a line, maybe an elevation that does not vary, from which measurements are taken.

I would think it very unusual for an English speaking American draftsman to name a part "Datum A". This leads us to an even more unusual phrase "Datum A is to be restrained for inspection".

Wingman, is there some more context you can give us?

[edit] Wingman said an American drawing, so it may or may not be an American draftsman, English may not be the draftsman's native language. Anybody's guess.

It is a drawing from a native US company. Does this make more sense?

Datum A should refer to a part....That part is to be held in place, by whatever means, to be inspected for whatever criteria is demanded....(ie: tolerance, movement, clearance etc.)

I dont, but maybe if you translate it into Chinese and back it makes more sense.

Or check if the instruction is given in another language in the first place.

oh i thought, the drawing had disappeared from his post, anyway a close up of the note (in the drawing) maybe would put it in context.

Our friend, wingman1985, is a translator. His interest is more in conveying the correct meaning of the information provided in technical documents, than in mechanical design.

I hope that's a fair summation.

It does not matter. Sometimes it takes a while for others to understand what a translator is.
