Making a USB Mouse Work?

03/16/2012 2:50 PM

I have a Dell Inspiron 9400 Laptop. I bought a wired USB mouse to use instead of the pad. The computer does not recognize this mouse, only the Dell pad? I then bought a wireless USB mouse and keyboard. The Dell recognizes the keyboard, but not the mouse. When I first plugged in the little USB Xmitter I got the window that says "new device recognized". At that point the mouse did work, then when I got the next window saying "device ready for use" the mouse stopped working while the keyboard did still work. When I look on the Control Panel for mice Hardware, it only sees the Dell pad. I've also tried 2 other wired USB mice to no avail. I've tested all the USB connectors with other devies and they all work.

Any thoughts?

What year is this computer? What O/S are you using? You might need to update your drivers...If your still using XP w/ sp3 there is an issue...

Try to upgrade drivers....If that doesn't work you might want to try this....remove sp3, go into devices, select 2001 driver support, plug in mouse, reinstall service pack3...

Go to the USB device manufacturer's site and download the latest version of the driver. Drivers are usually categorized by Operating System so it's easy to find.

are the batteries in the mouse fully charged and making good contact. check the the batteries for the correct polarity. also, make sure the mouse is turned on. try reinstalling the mouse reciever in a different usb port. try a new mouse pad. my mouse won't work on some pads.

There are some issues with some OSs needing to be up and running fully and the correct drivers, correctly installed in the correct manner (read instructions first!) before USB devices of any sort can be used.

While booting up, if you need to put in a password, no deal with keyboards that I have used as no drivers are installed at that moment in time. Older DOS stuff can also be a problem too, though some USB DOS drivers are around I am told.

Is that what you are talking about? (You did not supply full details.)

To use USB devices before the OS is up and running, you would need extra hardware to handle that.....I do not know if it has been developed or not....I have never seen or heard about it myself.

Furthermore, USB radio devices must be "linked" to the base device in some simple manner (usually a button on the base and then operating the device in some manner). Read the instructions.

Condition solved! We did try updating drivers and looking for issues with Service pack 3, but that did not change anything. We scoured the Microsoft, Dell, and Logitech website for answers to no avail.

Then we found a comment from someone when we Googled looking for clues. It turned out that the mouse shows up in the Device manager as "HID Compliant Device". All we had to do was change that to "HID Compliant Mouse". Simple but frustrating solution!

Thank you all for your answers!
