Would You Parachute Jump From Outer Space?

03/16/2012 12:56 PM

This proves to me that all the fire and heat ssociated with landing space craft is about slowing down from orbital velocity, not altitude.

Felix Baumgartner prepares to jump at 71,580 feet- that's almost twice as high as commercial airliners at 35,000 feet!

On March 15, 2012, Austria's Felix Baumgartner jumped out of a space capsule from an altitude of approximately 71,580 feet as the Red Bull Stratos project moved forward into the manned flight stage in New Mexico. The 42-year-old rode the space capsule attached to a giant helium balloon above the so-called "Armstrong Line." The goal of the Red Bull Stratos project is to see Baumgartner attempt a record-breaking freefall from 120,000 feet this summer where he'll potentially become the first man to go supersonic without the support of a vehicle.

Anybody know who made the fittings and components for the space capsule, space suit, and breathing systems?

Precision machinists did!

Felix Baumgartner and Red Bull Stratos Team put them to quite a test!

Happy Landing!

I only tried Red Bull twice.....................mixed with vodka.

I jumped into inner space.

Never again.

I had no idea that anyone was trying to top Joe Kittinger's free-fall record of over 102,800 feet. There's a video of that jump, too. I'm glad to see that their doing these jumps with Joe as a consultant.

As for the claim of reaching supersonic speed, that seems absurd to me. I realize that Joe did not assume the most streamlined position and he had a small stabilizing drogue parachute that slowed him down a little but according to my calculations Joe's free-fall record velocity is about 0.1 Mach.

I had heard, I believe it was on the history channel or national geographic that Joe also had a hole in his glove that he notice on the way up.

Which he did not mention for fear of canceling the mission.

He said when he jumped because of a lack of atomsphere, he had no feeling of dropping. Because of that, when he looked back and the condola, it appeared that the balloon was the one that was traveling away from him.

If I knew enough about the mission and the equipment, probably yes.

If you go straight up, and come straight down, I don't think you would have the risk of the re-entry heat. A drogue chute should do the job.

I wonder how the craft in geo-synchronous orbit got up there, how did they slow down to stay over one spot on the Earth?

Actually they sped it up so that its Surface feet per minute was in the same direction and magnitude of the spot on earth below it.

Think of synchronizing a tool with a rotating workpiece...
