Best Practices - Technical Investigation Tracking & Communication Forms...

03/21/2012 10:50 AM

Hi folks,

I'm (always) in search of the best examples of forms, checklists, report templates, etc., which help us engineering/technical folks (and anyone for that matter) capture, organize, track, communicate, report the pertinent background of technical problems (e.g. a supplier's production part failure impacting an OEM's production schedule), ongoing findings of the team, and sharing that information collaboratively with other team members via something more evolved than Outlook e-mail trails.

FYI, I'm just starting to investigate using our Microsoft SharePoint intranet site to create 'ad hoc' technical issue investigation forums, but I'm really more interested in finding good examples of tracking, summarizing forms that facilitiate a 'lean' communication reporting toolset so the most people get the latest and greatest investigation updates in the shortest amount of time.

Here are a couple of resources I've used in the past, but I would really like to find some good engineering-centric issue tracking methods and forms, etc.

Thanks in advance for ANY resources or suggestions or feedback you can, regarding this topic!

Respectfully,

Jim

there are some tools in project management that may be of use, such as (EVM) Earned Value Management. Of course it depends on the size of the project to justify the use of this type of tracking.

Your links are actual project management tools. Since this is a wide spectrum address controls and risks.

Thanks for the suggestion! I've been 'lucky' enough to stay away from EVM for most of my career, though I understand its value to effective management of project resources and schedule, etc.

I think what I'm also trying to avoid is creating my own custom form to capture and track a technical issue investigation. As much as I enjoy 'creative technical writing', email summaries and attachments get lost in the Inbox and don't guarantee that 'everyone' interested in the particular issue has access to teh latest & greatest developments. Thanks again!

We just purchased sharepoint and are looking at what other ways it can be applied. This seems interesting.
