How do you excit the poles on a generator?

What i mean is ... if there is no excitation (or excitement), it is just a piece of steel (or some organic material) with perhaps a winding around it. It will not be a pole. North or South.

Normally I show the generator some dirty movies ("shafts gone wild" and "filthy gearboxes" work well).
