Hydrogen Gas

03/27/2012 10:28 PM

In our process we add Zn to H2SO4 and the result is ZnSO4+H2.H2 is a hazard, Is there something we can add to our process to get rid of the H2 and not have an impact on our final product(ZnSO4)

Capture it and sell it as fuel.

or

Burn it (means add Oxygen to creat H2O, which should have no impact on your product.)

You can not stop your process just because H2 is hazardous. In fact you should try to en-cash it as suggested at #1. If you are using gaseous fuels, you can supplement its calorific value by adding H2. H2SO4 is also hazardous, why to use then? Atomic power plants are hazardous but can we have energy security without it?

Follow appropriate hazard mitigation technology.

This is good by product of manufacturing process. Wester world is working hard to generate cheaper hydrogen to move out of grip of Middle East oil and hydrogen is one selected to make this happen using solid oxide fuel cell and hydrogen car. Even Tata is running bus using plug power Fuel cell which burns hydrogen and have by product water.

Your is free try to develop market for this and if you need help let me know I will guide you through

Industrial processes that can not use their H2 by-product, frequently burn it. For example, H2 furnaces often vent the H2 into an open pipe and continuously burn it.

I should add to my previous post that in order to burn off excess H2, you need to maintain positive H2 pressure at the burn-off entrance. If inlet H2 pressure drops below exit pressure you will get a flash-back explosion. Those are normally not dangerous, but can be very disruptive.

Burning off the hydrogen, as described by several people above, is called a "flare".

Depending on the tonnage of your production you could (1) compress and bottle the recovered hydrogen (purify by passing thru platinum membrance if need be), and sell the gas as a pure gas (provided of course that you maintain the purity of the hydrogen). Hydrogen is useful as a coolant for generator rotors in power generation facilities. Or you could (2) compress hydrogen only to the extent needed to provide fuel for the fuel cell(s) you install to generate electric power with, and reduce your overall energy expenditure by the amount sent back through your meter.
