No. The fire bricks start off as a clay like substance and are then fired in a kiln at very high temperatures. You cannot grind them up and turn them back into clay. They are likely ceramic or something similar.

Correct. Imagine leftover pieces of a cake, and the same question.

Thanks Doorman. I tried to think of an example, but couldn't come up with one. Cake is perfect............................you can't grind it back into flour.

Yeah, after something has been altered by exposure to heat it's pretty hard to un-ring the bell.

I suppose our friend Brett could pulverise the dropoff pieces and use the powder as part of the sand for grout, but I suspect this might alter the chemistry of the grout enough to be some trouble.

It does seem a waste to send the drops to a rubble fill site. That is what usually happens on projects in the USA.

I've got a dirt road coming out to my house that is owned by the county, but not maintained by the county..........................maintainence is up to me. I wish I knew this guy.

People wonder why I get frustrated with gov't. I pay my taxes and they won't even drop me off a load of gravel to fill in the pot holes.

kram,

Do you have a County Highway Commissioner in your county that you can contact?

I had a similar problem when I bought the family farmstead.

I became a festering boil on our Comish's back side years ago and my road has been maintained ever since.

The hard part was getting listed on the maintenance route but apparently in my county once you are on the route it is permanent. Maybe the same for you?

Just a thought.

Thanks KJK..........................but it's not going to happen. The mailman won't even come down here, which is fine. Just to make their point, the county changed the street sign to private drive, along with the street name, which is BS.

Besides, they are short on money. But, they are building a $200 million justice center in Raleigh to replace the fully functional existing one. Bear in mind, that the primary purpose of this project is to deal with criminals. So if I ever want to get any use out of that particular waste of tax dollars, I will have to get arrested and go to trial in a luxurious new courtroom.

Bear in mind the silica content of some fire bricks.

Use the "drops' as clean rubble fill, rather than landfill them. Some land owners will accept them to fill depressions on their properties. As others have said before me, they cannot be reconstituted once the clay has been fired.

Yes! Look up homemade castable refractory articles by Lowell Baker in Ceramics Monthly. He used to be active on the clayart forum but I haven't been on in a long while. IIRC, The basic recipe is 2 parts by volume crushed firebrick in 3/4" to dust, 1 part Portland cement, 2 parts perlite and 4 parts sawmill sawdust, this last should be more like flakes and sifted through a 1/2'' screen. I think the basic mix was good to cone 3-4, higher (c10) with a added fraction of alumina hydrate or use of calcium aluminate cement from Lafarge industries. The high alumina mix could be applied as an inch and a half thick hot face as you ram up the forms. Best of luck B
