Interference In Fiber Optic Cable By Power Cable

03/31/2012 4:37 AM

Is there a chance for interference if I run fiber optic cable and 220V power cable in the same cable tray for 20m to 30m ?

Not unless your power cable emits light. S.M.

It's not advisable to run 220v in the same conduit as fiber optic cable. The conduit used for f.o. is different than that for regular power lines. If you insist on running them togather you should be sure that your f.o. couplings are perfect. But I have no idea what I'm talking about.

There is no chance for interference. Frequency used to transmitt optical signals is about 1000 times greater than the power frequency.

Conventional forms of interference will not affect the optical fibre cable such as RF, power lines, Arcing HV and even nearby lightning strikes.

Thanks for the comments.

I got the following from cableorganizer.com

Fiber optic can't be interfered with ! Because f.o. cables are glass based , they don't conduct electricity .

Dear all,

I think 1000 times is too small. It may be around 10^13 times greater.

Don't forget to check your local electrical standards and regulations as you may not be allowed to run the two cables in the same cable tray, or alternatively may need to separate them down the 20-30m length (this is regardless of the fact they won't interfere with each other).
