Iron Eating Bacteria

04/01/2012 12:40 PM

One of the reasons the price of steel has gone so high lately is not entirely because of increased demand. There is a recently discovered organism that eats iron and converts it into useless rust.

The organism has never been detected on the surface of the earth, and scientists suspect it may have been released by drilling mud from oil wells.

The organism is multiplying and spreading at an exponential rate, and all attempts to slow or stop it's progress have been futile.

Scrap dealers all over the world are faced with a delemna:

Hold out for a higher price, or risk losing everything to this new threat when it attacks their stocks.

Unless a remedy is found soon, all of the steel in the world will be consumed in a matter of 2 years.Society as we know it will be radically changed forever.

Structures with steel, like bridges, skyscrapers, vehicles, ships etc.will be digested. No man made coating or process can halt the progress of this threat. It is accustomed to high temperatures and pressure, acids, alkali, radiation, and can penetrate paint, epoxy, glass, plastic,to seek out and find it's food.

Genetic variations have been found that also attack copper, tin, lead, silver, platinum gold and even iridium.

This species of metal eaters have been given the Latin name of Slooflirpa.sti

Is our future back to the stone ages?

Sounds like the plot of a science fiction book I read when I was a kid:

This scourge was released as a result of a self-proclaimed "very influetial businessman's" misguided efforts to drill down a mile and a half into solid granite.

He made it all the way down to La La Land, then was defeated by reality.

I remember watching this. Panorama was one of my favourite programmes.

The same year, the man who ran a serious BBC radio programme told of a new piece of equipment which, from the outside of the room, would make a film of the inside using the sounds emanating from the inside.

British spelling because it's about the UK, I find myself doing that a great deal.

UPDATE! NEWS FLASH!

The bacteria are now attacking hemoglobin in all mammals.Geritol has sold out in all stores, and scalpers are charging exorbitant prices for the dwindling supplies.

The Iron Man competition has been cancelled, the Iron Curtain(from the cold-war era) in the Moscow Museum has disappeared.Railroad tracks are rapidly disappearing, and mass transit has been brought to a virtual standstill.

Buses stand idle beside the interstates, nothing but piles of rust, sitting on lumps of rubber, littered all around by smaller piles that used to be cars.Purple faced people are sitting around, without enough energy to move.

Will this be it?

The iron age was once heralded as the beginning of modern man.

Was it really the beginning of the end?

(How ironic!)

Just don't get it wet!

When it is exposed to water, sh1t does down, fur goes up and sticks to ceiling then drops onto occupants.

Floors are slick as sh1t and attract all the dogs in the neighborhood.

I have it covered. TCM Tech Service has a service update to fix those problems.

I may even have a sales person available soon too. He's crazier than squirrel sh!t and operantly has been selling it selling it for some time now with surprising success.

I think he may even be willing to work for Handy Wipes and tokens for the local car wash for his payment.

"Is our future back to the stone ages?"

Unlikely. They found a bacterium which eats stone. Gonna make mining for iron and all those other metals practically effortless, but there's gonna be a backlash. Droves of pissed off miners becoming genetics engineers to spite their former employers. Not a pretty sight.

In 1980s in Saudi Arabia damage to deepwell submersible pumps(400m depth) was attributed to iron bacteria. Even insulation of motor winding(4.16kV) was replaced by manufacturer.

Yes, iron eating bacteria really do exist, here's a pic of them at work on the Titanic's engines..( note: these are nearly 4 stories high). luckily they are controlled by rust eating bacteria...
