IM & PM Used with PLC

Will anyone explain me about IM(Interface Module),PM(Power Module) used with PLC please also explain when should be IM & PM are need to be used with PLC? and when not need to be use?

Power module :Power supply unit for the PLC

Interface module

Interface module: This is a part of I/O modules allows you to control field instruments .The link between the interface module and PLC is controller specific .
