Comparing Carbon Steel and Other Materials For the Transport of Acetone

04/24/2012 5:06 AM

I searched online a lot for which material is better for making pipes to transport acetone, and carbon steel seemed to be the most popular.

But can i get some comparisons such as comparing high density poly ethylene, carbon steel and aluminium?

thanks:)

There are dozens of materials compatibility tables on the internet. Try this one.

thanks!it shows me which materials would be better, but i need some wordy comparisions, like why stainless steel and aluminium is excellent with acetone but carbon steel gets a B only.

Perhaps it has got something to do with materials compatibility following testing. It can't be random.

It's time to do some research. Do as was suggested and go to 3 or 4 sites and cite them.

Will your power point slides give credit, such as, "This information was verified by CR4. A group of total strangers in a forum on the internet. Their qualifications? Well, they can type. They seemed knowledgeable."

You need real data from recognized sources.

Acetone isn't particularly difficult to transport. Even some polymers will work, but you need to know why. I'd do my own research, otherwise, if someone asks you a question that you can't answer, your credibility will be zero.

This is sorta like homework. You need to do it yourself to succeed.

OK. Google some aluminium pipe suppliers and carbon steel pipe suppliers, and compare price per unit length of the same sizes. "Better" will become both qualified and quantified.

Hint: why not use gold pipe? Or platinum? No compatibility issues to worry about there!

The most important handbook at that topic is the NACE Handbook "Corrosion Data Survey - Metal Section", pages 2 & 3, from which you can find the best material to resist the corrosion.
