I think this is the same as I found when my hard drive packed in, you may well need a new hard drive.

Guest (Post#1) is probably right. You may need a new hard drive. Then again, your power supply may need to be checked too.

I suggest you take your PC to a service center to be sure.

It sounds like you reinstalled the operating system. If that is correct, did you write zero's to the hard drive before you reinstalled the OS? If not, it would be a good idea to do that and then reformat it and then install the OS. Quite often a virus or malware will survive the reinstallation of the OS unless you write zeros to the hard drive.

It's really hard to diagnose a problem like that without doing it hands on. I'll list some of the things you should check for and if that doesn't work contact me and I'll give you some other suggestions.

Capacitors, make sure none are swelled up. ( this is probably what I would do first) By that I mean the tops should be flat and not domed at all. If they are domed (bulging up on the top and maybe leaking a brown liquid) they need to be replaced...preferably replace the motherboard or component that they are on.

Make sure all the fans are running properly(CPU, and power supply and any on the video card if it has a fan)

Power supplies need to be checked with one of the little cheap load testers or else tried in another machine. I'm assuming all the dust is out of the power supply and the rest of the computer.

Memory (ram) maybe is going bad...try to check in another machine, each stick indiviually, or if you can keep your machine running check it with a free Microsoft Memory Test. Run it in the advanced or extended mode for about 20 cycles. It will take a while but sometimes it won't act up until its stressed a bunch.

Pull out any additional cards(modem, network, ect and add them back in one by one to see if you can find a bad one. A video card will do what you are describing so if possible check it in another machine.

Some programs especially some utility type ones, usually free, will cause problems. Remove them and then add them back in one by one to see if you can catch a bad one.

Good luck.

I think it's best to have your computer checked at a computer shop, or ask some one who knows a little more about computers. Asking this question on a forum is like asking : my car doesn't start, what's wrong ?

Thousands of reasons could be the problem, as well with the car, as with your computer.

But still : I wish you good luck "

1. Keep 50% free space on C:\ by shifting data to D: or E: and try. 2. Check your SMPS and RAM card. If RAM card is not properly inserted in to the slot also leads to this problem.

If its been awhile since you've had the cover off, you may have dust on the RAM sticks. Dirt bridging the contacts can cause what you describe. The sticks act like little dirt magnets. Eventually it will get to the point that it won't boot at all. The fix won't cost a thing!

Good Luck

All those I have either seen or bought have been a waste because they never cover the problem you will have.

This can also be caused by the power switch on your computer. Take the front cover off and verify that the switch is not sticking or that the button on the cover (seperate from the switch) is not causing the problem.

If it's Windows you're running:

I encountered this once, I can tell what is the likely problem to cause it, but unfortunately, the only practical remedy for this would be to re-install Windows, or it's pre-made ghost. Sorry.

Vulcan, I cannot disclose this in public, because it's a malicious way to collapse the operating system, we can discuss it via mail.

Mine was doing goofy things like that and then wouldn't boot up at all. The computer store had me a) try a new power supply b) unplug all peripherals from the power supply except the mother board. It still wouldn't boot up and the computer store had to replace the mother board. If it had booted up with the drives unplugged, c) would have been to plug the peripherals back in one at a time.

New motherboard was about $140 installed, cheaper than a new computer and less hassle than transferring all the data. Incidentally, regular backup to a CD would have reduced my stress level a lot. I thought we'd lost all the data.

As someone has already suggested - clean the insides.

I had the same problem last week - crashing on start-up - only got to the "Intel Inside" screen, then nothing else.

Dust in vents and vanes of heatsinks; stuck to fan blades - inside the power supply casing. Once cleaned, the problem disappeared, and booting is twice as fast!

Hello,

Just wondering if you got your problem figured out?

I used to own a computer company that I sold a year ago to the employees. If you haven't I could get some more ideas from them.
