Unpublished capabilitiy in a floppy drive (0 or 1)

05/08/2007 12:53 AM

I have been searching for new internal floppy disk drives with one important feature: I must be able to configure them for Drive 0 or Drove 1. (The instruments I am replacing the drives in have a special cable that makes it inconvenient for me to twist the wires.)

I understand they come as drive 1 and most have removed the option to configure them. Some have a solder trace for configuration. and they used to have jumpers. I need to buy about 50 configurable drives at a good price.

Can someone help me with some model numbers of currently sold drives that are configurable?

Thanks!!

Original floppy disk drive cables had wires 10-16 seperated and reversed, then connected to the first drive connector. Swap pins 10 and 16, maybe also 12 and 14.

I have been converting current 3.5inch floppy drives this way as replacements in IBM Control units.

For my 17 year on computer, haven't seen one come with any jumper to set 0/1. It maybe easier to make/find an adapter to do that if you can fix the cable.

The last time I saw what you refer to was a very old 720Kb drive since they have been 1.4Mb drives that stopped.

I have a adaptor somewhere that flipped the drives numbers by moving the jumper.

For the most it is pin to pin.

I know, it's stupid that all drives are set to 1. I repaired ATARI computers for a long, long time. They also had their first drive as 0. In the past you could buy diskdrives that had a jumper. So that was no problem.

But since they stopped manufactoring drives with a jumper, you have to check out the printed circuit board. I NEVER had a drive where there was not a solder pad. You'll probably need a magnifying glass to find it. Often there's a lot of solder islands close together. Find the one that says "Drive 0". Take good care, 'cause there also will be pads for making the drive 1 sided, and for DD (Double Density) or HD (High Density). On some older drives, you'll have to remove a pad (the pad for drive 1), but nowadays, the drive is standard 1 until you solder the pads.

Good Luck !

I know : it's like searching for a needle in a haystack, but believe me, there is ALWAYS one
