Esperanto is possible, but a tad Eurocentric. A common system of unit might be a start....if we can persuade America to go metric. Oh, well... . Where are the Borg when you need them .

It is said that English is barely universal. What more you need?

Which English ?

As for "metrication" I remember a Machine Design paper promising 30 years ago a full metrication in 10 years.

Music is the universal language. It's great for expressing emotions and moods but not so good at technical communication. So a common language already exists, but this language can only communicate some concepts.

There should be some sort of penalty for revisiting old threads.

I don't hear any whistling. I thought dogs, bats and other small furry creatures were the only ones who could hear flying rodents whistle.

I forgot. Sign language that is used by the deaf is global.

Not even close to true. There are over 200 recorded sign languages world wide. Of these there are over a dozen distinct deaf-community signed languages and all of these have there own regional dialects. However, deaf people who sign understand that they have a communication impediment with most of the world. So most of them make the extra effort to bridge the gaps. They too get upset with the embarrassingly common American attitude that English is the universal language so an American doesn't have to learn any other language.

Sure enough.

It should be true. I always just assumed it was international.

It's a bit early, but signing has many forms. I'll root this up if need be, but there are literally hundreds of systems. Is there anybody out there with expert knowledge on signing and similar communication ? There is no 'universal' signing language (as far as I know), but some amazingly good systems. When watching somebody who can communicate by signing, I feel like a pathetic idiot.

If there were to be a universal system of language, I think that signing would be the best place to start.

Redfred set me staight. I didn't do any searching. It just seemed logical to me that there would be a uniform international standard for signing. It just goes to show...............where humans are concerned, logic rarely enters into the equation.

Signing, music, mathematics, it's all there. Just how do some people communicate when deprived of senses ? I have no idea. I've been amazed by some people who lack one sensation, but to be able when lacking multiple sensation ???? Helen Keller is an obvious example, but it's been my privilege and shame to meet some people of such ability.

When she looks at me with those eyes and her hands just so, i get the message, regardless of language, degree of intoxication, or other factors. There are universal body languages and i recognize the feminine form of "come hither." milo

The bulk of the world speaks Chinese, and Spanish isn't very far behind.

Mathematics is a global language, and might just be pan-galactic.

Just sayin'....

Nematodes are prolific, but I don't think they're interested in cross-species communication.
