Please elaborate.

Do you want to break at zero or do you want zero friction? etc.

A drill press usually have a mechanical device to limit the depth.

Being a water guy i interpret a drilling machine to drill a bore well in the ground.

Never switch them on. this will always prevent any breakdown. Or write up a monthly maintenance schedule and stick with it. Good reliability requires good planning and the willingness to spend money.

BrainWave ---- Excellent Advise -- with machine shop equipment, daily inspection, along with a thorough periodic PM is surely the way to go. Even with this there still may be some downtime.

I work for an oil well drilling contractor. We don't calll our crew members roughnecks for nothing. As hard as you might try to have a complete maintenance program, they'll try to break something. Zero break down is a myth not unlike that of a perpetual motion machine.

Redundancy, PM's

If you can't affrod downtime, install extra capacity!

Like all mechanical items, breakdowns are almost inevitable. The best one can do is to minimize the possibility of breakdowns. Lubricate the bits well during drilling. Never apply excessive pressure when drilling. Carry out regular maintenance. Lubricate all moving parts well. It won't prevent breakdowns due to ageing, but at least it will prolong the life of your equipment and keep breakdowns to a minimum.

Brake, i.e. slow down from speed, or

Break, i.e. fracture so as to become unserviceable?

Zero break down in the tooling (drill bit) or the machine itself?

Either way, you won't achieve zero break down in any case... (even if it is unused and sitting on the shelf, everything decays, right? I mean, evolution in reverse seems to be the scientific rule regardless of what some tell us... <G>)

Anyhow... If you want long term reliability, go with a machine that has extra capacity... For manual drilling, a big drill press or even Bridgeport in many cases. For automatic machines... If you are drilling a 1/4" hole, go with something that has the capacity for 1", etc... Extra HP. Geared down RPM rates with heavy duty components, etc...

remember that sooner or later, down time is less expensive than extra capacity. Commuting to work in a tank will keep you from getting door dings, but at what cost? Same applies to manufacturing and/or processing. A $10 million machine may work awesome for you but cost more to set up than a cheaper machine will cost in it's lifetime.
