12 V LED Light Connectors

05/30/2012 5:39 PM

Does anyone know a source for the plug-in connector shown?

The manufacturer of the light would know.

I only have a light , no manufacturer name, that I can read. There is a sticker with Chinese writing, but my Chinese is very weak. I did contact the seller, but there was a language problem. He didn't understand my wants, and said he only sells lights.I want to make extension cables so I can mount the drivers in a box and have the light remotely located. With plugs on the ends, it would be easier to swap out components in the event of a failure.

Molex comes to mind.

I doubt they will sell direct (unless you need several thousand), but they can steer you to a distributor after you identify which one you need.

Or, identify and google search the result.

[edit] I like lyn's response better. They probably have some to sell you.

GA

But this does bring an added complication though. Your find includes a driver module that the OP appears to not have. I wonder if the voltage between lamp and driver is 12V or just nominally around 12V as the knee point of the LED changes with temperature. In other words, is this a similar package to the OP unit or is the OP missing the driver module? If the OP is missing a module, then just connecting this to a 12V voltage source instead of a current source might have consequences.

Any marine supply store carries the molded polarized plugs for a few dollars...

Here's a dimmable driver for European voltage....

Here is a list of adapters for any voltage requirement...

He did say he had the drivers in the original post:

"so I can mount the drivers in a box and have the light remotely located."

If this is the same device as the OP wrote about, it doesn't require an external driver. It has an internal one and runs on 85 to 265 VAC.

Sorry if this doesn't answer the original question about the plug, though. The pic isn't good enough for ID, but it looks generic. I would wade through the Digikey catalog, or others for it. It might be simpler to just use insulated screw terminal. How often do you plan to replace LEDs, anyway?

As mentioned, looks like a Molex product (or knock-off). Here's a link to the datasheet for what I think may be the correct product line. Once you find the connector you need using the datasheet, you can do a Google search to see who might have them. If you only need a few, you might be able to get Molex to send some samples, if you can convince them there's a possibility you are a manufacturer that's going to buy a lot of them in the future :)

LINK

Hope that helps,

Tom D.

Each driver has a connector already right?

If you want to mount the drivers remotely from the lamp then cut the connector off the driver's pigtails and solder/crimp/etc it onto the lamp end of your extension cable. The driver end of the extension cable can be connected with say a screw terminal or other suitable terminating hardware that is available.

Alternatively, you can cut the connector off the lamp and move it to the driver end of the extension cable to make driver replacement a bit quicker.

Be mindful of heating issues when placing the drivers in an enclosure.

This seems to be identical to IEC 3 pin connector normally used with all electrical apparatuses like tea and coffee makerss, PCs , electric kettles etc

Check manufacturer's recommendation as to how far the driver can be from the LED: most are limited to a metre or two.

Might it be easier to keep the drivers with the lights and put extension cords to the drivers?

If, it is .093 (just a guess from looking) then this might help. It is from Allied Electronics at WWW.alliedelec.com

TE Connectivity 1-480318-0

Products > Connectors > Rectangular Connectors > Connectors > 1-480318-0 View More TE Connectivity Rectangular Connectors >>

They can be reached by calling 1-800-435700. Good luck.

The lower link has a selection of very similar connectors. There are also kits that contain pins, sockets, plugs and receptacles in the pin size that you have.

While many people here have tried to identify this connector, there's one thing that nobody has mentioned. It looks like this crimp and poke connector style will require a specialty crimping tool to put pins on wire and assemble the extension cable the OP wants. If the OP does not have a suitable crimping tool, then a poor connection seems very likely to me even with the correct parts being used.

Many trucks are using LED lights, as are traffic signals. Would one of their connectors work?

Re: 12 V LED Light Connectors

What is wrong (what is right??) with this post?

1) No closeup of the connector with main dimensions

2) No indication of the voltages being used.

3) The OP does not tell us where he lives, so what may be a good answer for Germany, may be useless for him!!!

I am sure that if he provided full information, one of the CR4 brotherhood could help him.....

I personally would simply replace the connector with one easily available and allowed (local laws) for the voltages/currents used....

OP will build a lovely connectorised setup to make maintenance soooo easy and then when it comes time to actually replace a failed driver the replacement will have a totally different connector anyway....

Yeh, you get that.

There are lot of connector arrangements possible if the true mate for the installed connector is not traceable, but the requirements are:

1. Polarized to protect erroneous connection

2. Power and Voltage ratings.

3. Space.

Hi Vtgiraud,

This can be found here, http://www.alliedelec.com/search/productdetail.aspx?SKU=70082718 for $0.23. I don't know if your contacts are pin or receptacle, you can find them here too. Hope this helps.

Rob.
