Super Battery Bank

06/02/2012 7:43 AM

Some time ago I raised the question about battery banks and cells and it was generally agreed that using larger 2V cells in series was better than many smaller cells in series/parallel. I went ahead and ordered and installed a 24VDC battery bank using 2V 600AH cells. Several of you wanted to see this so to complete the subject I am sending in this picture which shows two strings of 12 2V cells in parallel providing 24Volts at 1200AmpHours.

Hope you enjoy.

John

Nice setup...Have you provided for emergency first aid?...any other safety considerations?...What sort of maintenance program have you set up?...Do you have any pics of the array you can show?

I´m not sure what you mean by emergency first aid. The equipment is located in a special "off limits" room which is locked so normal folks don´t touch anything..

I provide routine maintenance checks to these customers but its usually very minimal since the batteries are sealed and the Exeltech inverters are incredibly reliable. So far in 4 years all I´ve had to do was change a fan and general cleaning.

This set up does not have an array yet. The owner says he will add an array some day and we use the OutBack MPPT controller just to start a generator.

His prime use is to cover black outs and he only uses the generator if the battery bank voltage drops too low.

I will send you a picture of a big system we built a couple of years ago right now.

Emergency equipment commonly installed at lead-acid battery banks would be an eyewash station, and often acid spill containment and absorbent materials under the bank in case of a leak. It may not be used often, but when it is needed, you will be glad you have it. The health hazards of battery acid should not be ignored.

Yes, They are Liberty LS2-600 which actually have 2 2V cells per jar and the copper plates allow use as 2V 600AH or 4v 300AH

Where do the copper plates come in to play, I always thought lead acid was lead acid what is the copper used for in this battery. Internal plate for power, or just as a connector from battery terminal to terminal. Duke

What you are seeing is two sets of series 12 - 2v in series that are then paralleled to get the 1200 AMP Hr rating one string on the left and one on the right.

Yes thats correct. Then in the bigger system you see 24 2V cells all in series because that system works at 48volts and 600AH
