Thermal Insulation for Plastic Extruders

06/05/2012 3:12 AM

Our company is based in the Philippines and we are currently extruding small profiles and accept pelletizing services. As some of you may know, electricity prices here is very high. Some plastic companies here are already using LPG to provide heat for the barrels of extruders. I'm also planning to odopt said technique.

With this in regards, i'm looking for a thermal insulation or blanket that i would use to cover the barrel case to prevent much of the heat from escaping. I currently use thermal wraps (same ones used at exhaust manifolds of automobiles) around the band heaters. I'm thinking of a similar or more efficeint product that is available in sheet form. Working temperature is 300-500 degrees celcius.

Hi Nelson,

I think that 'mineral wool" would fit your application:

Thickness will determine the rate at which you will lose heat, so choose accordingly. Hopefully, you have delivery there for McMaster-Carr products.

I'm sure you can get this material at many other places.

Best of luck!

I've tried mineral wool before. It tends to pulverize in the long run due to vibrations. The woven type blanket works better for me.

My friend wants to know the size of fabric required by you and quantity. He has confirmed he will supply woven fabric with wool sandwiched to prevent heat loss. Please send me reply on my e-mail sureshsharma@yahoo.com.

Hi Nelson,

Please let me know if have already installed the thermal insulation blanket on hot chamber of extruder?. Could you save the energy due to above blanket installed by you?.This information would help others in similar applications.

Regards,

Suresh Sharma

Hi. I have not yet installed or purchased the blanket. Still waiting for quotation from a friend. Could you email me exact quotation and dimensions.

By the way, I'm still looking for a suitable LPG controller with flame detector. I'm looking at the controller from LPG fired ovens. With keep you posted.
